The 2026 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) ran from Monday, 26 October to Wednesday, 28 October. A learner’s KPSEA result is not just the score from those three days. It combines school-based assessment (SBA) scores from Grades 4, 5 and 6 (60 per cent) with the national assessment (40 per cent).
KNEC and the Ministry of Education have not yet announced a 2026 results date. Last year, the Education CS announced that the KPSEA and KJSEA results would be released in December.
How the KPSEA score is calculated
KNEC’s notice to schools in July 2026 set out the weights:
| Component | Weight |
|---|---|
| School-based assessments, Grades 4, 5 and 6 | 60% |
| National assessment (KPSEA, Grade 6) | 40% |
Each of the three SBA years contributes 20 per cent. KNEC CEO David Njengere told learners on 25 October that their results will combine their school-based scores with the summative assessment they were about to sit.
An illustration. The numbers below are invented to show how weighting works, not an official KNEC scale. If a learner’s combined SBA component were 70 and the national assessment 80 on the same scale, the final would be (0.6 × 70) + (0.4 × 80) = 74. A strong exam lifts the score, but it cannot erase weak classroom records from earlier years.
What KPSEA results decide
KPSEA does not decide whether a child proceeds to junior school. Every Grade 6 learner moves on to Grade 7, so there is no KCPE-style selection into junior school.
The result still matters later. KPSEA contributes 20 per cent of the Grade 9 KJSEA score, which is used for Grade 10 placement:
| Component of the KJSEA score | Weight |
|---|---|
| KPSEA (Grade 6) | 20% |
| School-based assessments, Grades 7 and 8 | 20% |
| KJSEA (Grade 9) | 60% |
KNEC’s July notice confirms this formula for the 2026 cohort.
When will results come out?
No official date has been announced. In 2025, CS Julius Ogamba said on 29 October that KPSEA and KJSEA results would be released in December, with KCSE following in January. KJSEA results then came out on 11 December 2025. Treat December as a reasonable expectation, not a promise, until KNEC or the Ministry confirms a 2026 date.
What parents should do now
- Wait for official channels. Results are announced by the Education CS and published through KNEC. Be wary of social media claims offering early or altered results.
- Check your child’s SBA record with the school. Because 60 per cent of the score comes from earlier assessments, a wrong or missing upload affects the final result. KNEC set a July 2026 deadline for schools to verify uploaded SBA scores.
- Do not expect a school selection. Grade 7 placement is not decided by a ranking, so the practical use of the result is to understand the learner’s strengths.
Why the weighting matters to teachers
The scoring leaves limited room for last-minute cramming. Teachers and schools control much of the final score through accurate, timely and well-evidenced SBA records across three grades. School heads who have not yet confirmed their uploads should do so with the sub-county office.

Frequently asked questions
Is it 60 per cent exam and 40 per cent school work?
No. For KPSEA, school-based assessments count for 60 per cent and the national assessment for 40 per cent.
Does KPSEA decide which junior school my child joins?
No. Every Grade 6 learner moves to Grade 7. The KPSEA score feeds into the KJSEA score three years later.
When will KPSEA 2026 results be released?
Not yet announced. In 2025, results were expected in December.
