No. KNEC does not allow candidates to wear wristwatches of any kind in KCSE examination rooms, whether smart, digital or ordinary analogue. Centre managers must put a working wall clock in every room so candidates can keep track of time.
The rule was repeated in a message to field officers dated 1 November 2026, as the exam entered its third week. Some reports described it as a new ban. It is better understood as a firm reminder of a restriction that KNEC has applied for several years.
What KNEC said on 1 November 2026
The message reminded field officers that wristwatches of any kind are not allowed for candidates in the examination room, and that centre managers must provide wall clocks in every room. It came with other reminders, covered in our guide to the KCSE 2026 week 3 rules: containers open at 7:00 am, phones stay locked outside exam rooms, and an approved weekly list of authorised personnel must be kept, with original IDs.
Is the wristwatch ban actually new?
Not really. The picture is easy to get wrong because early coverage often mentioned smartwatches, which are the biggest cheating concern.
- October 2023: KNEC’s list of prohibited items named smartwatches among electronic devices and separately listed wristwatches.
- 2025: KNEC’s briefing on exam administration said wristwatches are not allowed and that schools should provide wall clocks. In November 2025, KNEC told centre managers to instruct candidates not to enter exam rooms with any wristwatch.
- 2026: KNEC’s candidate guidelines list wristwatches among prohibited items, and the 1 November message repeats it.
Some outlets reported that analogue watches were allowed until now. KNEC’s own earlier lists do not support that, so candidates should not assume a plain watch is tolerated at any centre.
Why watches are banned
A modern watch can store text or connect to a phone, and it is hard for an invigilator to tell at a glance. Banning every wristwatch removes the guesswork. It also stops disputes on exam day about whether a particular watch is “smart.”
What candidates should do
- Leave all watches at home. That includes watches you only use for the time.
- Locate the wall clock when you sit down, and agree a pace for each section with yourself before you start.
- Practise without a watch. If your school mocks allowed watches, rehearse timing with a wall clock so the real paper feels familiar.
- Wear no smart bands or fitness trackers. These are electronic devices and are prohibited.
What centre managers must do
- Fit a clock that works and is visible from every desk in each examination room.
- Check batteries and the time before papers begin, and set every clock to the same time.
- Tell candidates and parents in advance that watches are not permitted.
Other items that remain banned
Phones, tablets, laptops, Bluetooth earphones, recording devices and programmable calculators are all prohibited unless KNEC specifically allows them. Under the KNEC Act, taking unauthorised items into an exam room counts as malpractice and can lead to cancellation of results. We cover the penalties in a separate guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a cheap analogue watch?
No. KNEC’s rule covers wristwatches of any kind.
What if my exam room has no clock?
KNEC requires centres to provide one. Raise it with the supervisor before the paper starts, not during it.
Are fitness bands allowed?
They are electronic devices and are not permitted.
