How to Check KCSE Results Online on the KNEC Portal
KCSE results are checked online at results.knec.ac.ke using the candidate’s index number and one registered name. Since the 2023 results, KNEC has not used an SMS code. The steps below are the ones KNEC and the Ministry of Education gave when the 2025 results were released on January 9, 2026.
The 2026 KCSE is still ahead. KNEC’s timetable runs from October 19 to November 20, 2026, and no release date for the 2026 results has been announced. Expect the method to be confirmed again by the Education Cabinet Secretary on results day.
How to Check KCSE Results Online
- Go to results.knec.ac.ke, or open the KNEC website and choose the KCSE Results option.
- Enter the candidate’s index number.
- Enter at least one registered name, spelled as it was on the examination registration data.
- Accept the privacy and access notice.
- Click search to view the results.
If the details are rejected, check the index number first, then the name. Use a name as it appeared at registration, not a nickname or a name changed since.
Is There an SMS Option?
Not from KNEC. The Cabinet Secretary said for the 2025 results that candidates would not be able to use the SMS short code, and that results would be available only through the KNEC website. The move away from SMS followed complaints from the public about fake results received by text.
Some websites still list SMS codes with a fee. Those are not announced by KNEC. Do not pay for or trust a “result” received by text. Check the portal.
If the Portal Is Slow or Down
The portal has struggled under traffic in the minutes after results were announced in recent years. If it happens:
- Wait and retry rather than refreshing repeatedly.
- Call KNEC’s call centre, which the council said runs 24/7 at the 2025 release.
- Remember that schools receive printed result slips, so the school is another route.
KNEC’s results-support lines, as published at the 2025 release:
| Type | Numbers |
|---|---|
| Toll-free | 0800721410, 0800724900 |
| Direct (not toll-free) | 0796975104, 0796974984, 0796975132, 0796974985, 0797147335, 0797146835 |
These numbers were published for the 2025 results. Confirm them in the announcement for the 2026 results.
Queries on Your Results: The 30-Day Rule
KNEC’s CEO said results-related queries must go through the head of institution within 30 days of the release date. Queries lodged later attract a fee. If something looks wrong on a slip (a missing subject, a wrong name, or a grade that does not match school records), tell your head teacher immediately and bring any supporting documents. Candidates do not lodge queries directly with KNEC.
How the KCSE Mean Grade Is Worked Out
Each subject is graded on a 12-point scale:
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 12 | C | 6 |
| A- | 11 | C- | 5 |
| B+ | 10 | D+ | 4 |
| B | 9 | D | 3 |
| B- | 8 | D- | 2 |
| C+ | 7 | E | 1 |
The overall grade does not average every subject taken. Under the reviewed system used since the 2023 examination, KNEC counts seven subjects:
- Mathematics
- The best language among English, Kiswahili and Kenyan Sign Language
- The five next best-performing subjects
Candidates register for between seven and nine subjects, so a weaker eighth or ninth subject does not have to count against you. The seven grades are converted to points, summed to an aggregate between 7 and 84, and converted to an overall letter grade using KNEC’s published bands.
Example: a candidate with Mathematics C+ (7), best language B- (8), and five other subjects of B (9), C+ (7), C+ (7), C (6) and C (6) has 50 points from seven subjects.
The 12-point scale is the same across subjects, but the marks needed for each grade are not. Mark boundaries differ by subject and can be adjusted by KNEC each year, so there is no single percentage table that applies to every subject.
For Context: What 2025 Looked Like
When the 2025 results were released, 270,715 candidates scored C+ and above, the grade that gives direct entry to public universities. 507,131 scored C- and above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check results without internet?
KNEC has not offered an SMS option for recent years. Schools receive printed result slips, so contact your school if you cannot get online.
Can a parent check a child’s results?
Yes. The portal needs only the index number and a registered name, so a parent with those details can search.
When will 2026 KCSE results be released?
Not announced. The 2026 examinations end on November 20, and results for 2025 came out on January 9, 2026. Treat any date from an unofficial site as unconfirmed.
