The 2026 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) ended on Friday, 30 October. Grade 9 learners now wait for their results, after which they will be placed in senior schools to start Grade 10 in January 2027.
KNEC and the Ministry of Education have not yet announced the 2026 results date. The best guide is last year’s pattern, when the first KJSEA cohort got results on 11 December, placement results on 19 December and reported to school on 12 January.
What has already happened
Learners chose their preferred pathways, subject combinations and senior schools before the exam. The Ministry opened selection for the 2026 cohort on 24 August. Learners pick 12 senior schools according to their pathway and subject combination.
That means there is no new choice to make before results come out. The next steps depend on KNEC and the Ministry.
The expected sequence
| Step | What happens | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Marking | KNEC marks and processes scripts and combines the different score components | November (not officially confirmed) |
| Results release | The Education CS announces results; candidates check them online | Date not yet announced |
| Placement | The Ministry matches learners to schools using scores and choices | Shortly after results |
| Placement results | Learners check their assigned school and pathway | Before the December holidays, if last year’s pattern holds |
| Review window | Families can request a review of a placement on valid grounds | Early January in 2025 (6-9 January) |
| Reporting | Learners join Grade 10 | January 2027, on dates the Ministry will announce |
The 2025 dates are given for reference and are not a promise for 2026.
How the final score was calculated last year
For the first cohort, CS Julius Ogamba said the final score combined three parts: 20 per cent from the KPSEA, 20 per cent from school-based assessments, and 60 per cent from the KJSEA. Some guides for the 2026 cohort describe the weighting differently, and I could not find an official confirmation of the 2026 formula. Wait for the Ministry’s announcement before treating any 2026 split as fixed.
KJSEA results are reported using an eight-level scoring scale, and learners receive result slips rather than certificates.
How placement works
Placement considers performance, the learner’s interests, pathway choices and other factors. The Education CS said on 30 October that top-performing learners will have an opportunity to be placed in boarding senior schools in their pathway. Learners are placed in one of three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science.
In the first cohort, about 88 per cent of learners ended up placed in line with their own selections after the review process. The rest were placed at other schools, which is why the review window matters.
What parents and learners should do now
- Keep contact details current. The 2025 placement results were checked online and by SMS to 22263, using the KNEC assessment number. Make sure you have that number ready.
- Do not trust results claims. KNEC has warned parents about social-media scams promising to alter scores. Results come only through official channels.
- Talk through plan B. Learners who are not placed in their first-choice school need a plan for the review window.
- Start preparing for senior school. Check joining instructions and costs once placement is announced, and avoid paying anyone for a “guaranteed” slot.
