Fully funded (tuition-free) scholarships for Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral studies at leading Russian universities through the Open Doors online competition, with additional government-quota places available for Kenyan students.

From what I’ve seen advising students across Kenya and East Africa over the last decade, navigating foreign scholarship systems often feels overwhelming. What makes the Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project unique is its direct, merit-based entry path. Rather than applying to universities individually and facing separate entrance tests, you enter an online competition. Winning guarantees direct, tuition-free placement at top Russian universities across Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral tracks.

For Kenyan students, this scheme is complemented by roughly 70 government quota seats promoted via Russian diplomatic channels. You can choose to study in English or Russian across a wide range of academic fields. If you choose a Russian-taught programme, a preparatory language year is included, alongside potential monthly stipends and university housing support.

The competition is conducted entirely online. From my experience, the biggest hurdle for African applicants isn’t the competition itself — it’s waiting until the last minute to compile academic records and write strong motivation letters. Start early, organise your portfolio carefully, and make sure your passport and transcripts are ready for verification.
