Nyeri County Promotes 800 ECDE Teachers

The Nyeri County Government has promoted over 800 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers from contract to permanent and pensionable status.

Previously, ECDE teachers were paid between Sh10,000 and Sh12, 000 per month and were entitled to a 31% gratuity upon the expiration of their three-year contract.

With the new contract, teachers will be able to retire with a pension because the county government will begin remitting 15% of their contributory pension to the County Pension Fund (CPF), while teachers will contribute 7.5% of their basic pay to the CPF.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga said after distributing the appointment letters to the teachers that, in addition to securing their future by providing permanent employment, the teachers would have the opportunity to advance their skills through a series of training opportunities that the county government had planned for them.

“In addition, it will help improve employee performance as well as help the county reduce turnover and maintain employees who possess critical skills,” said Kahiga.

Elsewhere, Wycliffe Oparanya, Governor of Kakamega County, has announced that the County will begin implementing the new Scheme of Service for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers this month.

Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) also received a boost after Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui presented appointment letters to 305 ECDE teachers as permanent and pensionable employees.
