KCSE 2026 Updates: Impersonation Arrest, Absent Candidates

A 31-year-old man is being held at Lanet Police Station in Nakuru after allegedly sitting the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in place of a registered candidate. Education officials in Nakuru County are investigating the case at Rohi Boys High School, a private school in Nakuru North.

Nakuru County Director of Education Victoria Mulili said the man has been sitting the examination for the candidate since Monday 2 November. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken the suspect, and investigators are looking into the matter.

The whereabouts of the candidate are unknown. Authorities believe the two know each other well. Mulili said impersonation is against the law.

A Kibabii University student was arrested in Bungoma over allegations of circulating examination materials. He was arraigned and released on KSh 20,000 cash bail, and he has been allowed to resume his studies. Bungoma County Police Commander Omar Arero said investigations are continuing.

Ogamba on candidates who have not reported

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba inspected the opening of an examination container in Kibra, Nairobi. He said the number of candidates who have failed to report to their examination centres is a growing concern.

Ogamba said Nairobi has 13 such cases. He appealed to chiefs to help find the candidates. The most affected areas, he said, are the informal settlements of Nairobi.

He also said one person was arrested on Tuesday 3 November for claiming to have the examination paper.

Ogamba said the number of candidate deaths during the examination period has risen to three. He named the candidates as Conjestina Achieng of Homa Bay, Cornelius Kiplagat and Vivian Adhiambo of Gem. He said Vivian Adhiambo was murdered and that a suspect is in custody.

The Ministry of Education says the examination process remains firmly under control, despite these incidents.
