Vihiga County Employes Over 800 ECDE teachers
The Vihiga County Government has taken steps to address the shortage of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.
The government has employed over 800 ECDE teachers on Permanent and Pensionable terms. This move was made just before schools reopened for the first term.
During the handing over of letters, Governor Dr. Wilberforce Ottichilo reassured the ECDE teachers that their welfare would be well taken care of now that they have better terms of service. He also pledged to introduce a school feeding program for young learners.
Dr. Ottichilo also encouraged teachers to embrace the use of technology in teaching, as the digital era is quickly being embraced by all. He also promised to engage both the teachers and learners in the ongoing countrywide tree-planting exercise that will help mitigate the challenges faced as a result of Climate Change.
County Executive Committee Member for Education, Science, Technical, & Vocational Training, Dr. Ruth Agesa, urged the teachers to engage their pupils in co-curricular activities that will nurture them positively.
She also assured them that learning materials would be provided adequately to enable them to offer services effectively.
It is reported that there is a shortage of early childhood development (ECD) teachers in Kenya.
Factors such as low pay and lack of training opportunities are cited as reasons for the shortage.
The Kenyan government has made efforts to address the issue through teacher training programs and increasing the budget for the education sector, but the shortage continues to be a challenge.
