Kenya Kwanza’s presidential running mate, Rigathi Gachagua, has promised to repeal the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) delocalization rule if his alliance wins power.

Gachagua stated at a rally in Embu on Monday, July 25, that the move will be done with the goal of keeping families together.

Gachagua contended that teacher delocalization fractures families because teachers are transferred far from their homes.

His administration, led by Deputy President William Ruto, will seek the tutors’ approval before developing a policy to address the issue.

“We shall not be a party to breaking families. Teachers will only be transferred from their home areas on their own volition,“ Gachagua pledged.

The policy was implemented with the goal of distributing teachers evenly across the country. TSC sought to ensure that no educational institution faced a teacher shortage.

Soon after, a nationwide uproar erupted, with many tutors lamenting their removal from their families and natural habitats.

After working outside for five years, the commission allowed delocalized teachers to return to schools near their homes in May 2022.

Over 750,000 teachers work in the country, including 341,760 at TSC, 170,000 in the private sector, and 238,686 who are unemployed.

Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja have both promised to meet teachers’ demands in order to win their support.
