Another Teacher Commits Suicide In Kirinyaga

Residents of Kirerema village in Kirinyaga County woke up in shoke on Monday, July 25, after a 45-year-old primary school teacher allegedly committed suicide.

Anthony Chomba Njuki’s body was discovered dangling from a tree inside a coffee plantation, according to Gichugu sub-county DCI Millicent Ochuka.

According to reports, Mr. Chomba committed suicide on the same plot of land where another neighbor, Mr. David Njogu, committed suicide not long ago.

Chomba’s father, Mzee Julius Njuki, claims that his son left his house around 1 a.m. – while his wife was sound asleep – and never returned.

His son was later discovered dangling by the neck a few meters away from his home.

“My son was a teacher at Kiandai primary school, and was very jovial on Sunday. I’m wondering why my son killed himself,” wondered Mzee Njuki.

Adding: “I don’t know why he hanged himself, yet he was a good farmer and also an employee of the Teachers Service Commission.”

The deceased did not leave a suicide note, according to detectives who visited the scene led by Ochuka.

“We have taken his body to Kibugi funeral home as we await postmortem,” noted officer Ochuka said.

Mr. Chomba is the second teacher in Kirinyaga to commit suicide this month.

On July 7, 2022, the body of a teacher from Mwea’s Wakaniu primary school was discovered inside a well in Kandongu village.

Nancy Wangithi Karuria, 56, was found with a suicide note in her home by detectives.

A resident discovered Madam Nancy’s body floating inside the well.

Residents of Kirinyaga have expressed concern about the region’s rising suicide rate.
