Despite the government’s ambitions to hire about 30,000 teachers to overcome the staffing gap, school managers are also facing a tutoring shortage for key topics.

Despite concerns that the recruitment process has been commandeered by politicians seeking to ensure their cronies priority, this is the case.

Slightly more than 100,000 teachers are needed in public schools, and fresh recruiting is a drop in the bucket.

In addition to the teacher deficit, around 15,000 teachers have been transferred to new stations as a result of a strategy of delocalization that has subsequently been reversed.

In a circular dated January 9 and sent to all regional directors, TSC stated that the moves were based on teacher requests and were intended to alleviate understaffing and fix county imbalances.

Those who have been transferred include 10,934 primary school teachers, 1,948 primary school principals, and 1,316 secondary school teachers. Also affected are 226 secondary school principals and 189 assistant principals.

There has also been debate regarding the physical location of junior secondary schools, with both the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) expressing concern that many teachers are under-trained and lack the skills necessary to administer CBC.

Knut contends that transferring the children to secondary schools may pose safety issues, while Kuppet contends that secondary schools are better able to handle the shift.

The impasse may jeopardize the transfer and new curriculum implementation.

In contrast, parents will have to dig deeper into their pockets as a result of the recent repeal of the subsidy relief government instituted in response to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Students in national and extra-county schools will now pay Sh53,554 instead of Sh45,554 due to the withdrawal of the subsidy at a time when many people are experiencing financial difficulties.

As school administrations struggle to stay afloat, they will pass on the high expense of meals to parents, causing them further suffering.
