Students Burning Schools Must Pay The Price – Duale
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale urged detectives on Wednesday to thoroughly investigate school fires and bring perpetrators to justice.
According to Duale, schools are significant investments in the future, and those who destroy such property are criminals who must be punished.
The MP delivered his remarks at Garissa High School, where he was attending a consultative meeting between education stakeholders and security officials led by Deputy County Commissioner Jacob Kipuri.
In his constituency, two schools—Garissa High and NEP Girls—were set ablaze in November, with two dormitories destroyed.
“If we have a few students or subordinate staff or whoever it is behind this unfortunate incidences, let the investigative agencies bring them to book,” Duale said.
A dormitory at Garissa High School was burned down last week. Bura Boarding Secondary School in Fafi sub-county’s only dormitory was also destroyed by fire.
Arson attacks on school property, according to the legislator, must stop.
He went on to say that some of the educational institutions took a long time and a lot of money to build.
The MP stated that the Garissa Township CDF will use the Emergency fund to renovate and rebuild the burned-down dormitories and that parents will not be charged.
Duale said that a well-educated workforce is the bedrock of any community and the future of any economy noting that investing in education always yields the best returns.
"No other investment yields as great a return.
"Let us all jealously guard these learning institutions. Parents should also nurture good behaviour on their children,” Duale said.

During the meeting, it was agreed that CCTV cameras should be installed in schools. The school security team was also urged to be cautious because they would be held responsible for any future incidents.
Duale also urged education stakeholders to concentrate on the upcoming KCSE exams in order to achieve a mean score of 7.8 this year, up from 6.8 last year.
