SEQIP To build 859 laboratories in 785 schools.

The Kenyan government plans to build 962 classrooms in secondary schools in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and marginalized areas.

This was revealed by Dr. Julius Jwan, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education.

He stated that classrooms for 561 secondary schools in 30 counties in ASALs and marginalized areas would be completed in December.

Jwan made the remarks on Monday while speaking to members of the Joint Mission of Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project (SEQIP) at Karen’s Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (CEMASTEA).

Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, was present, as was Mr. Elijah Mungai, Director of Project Coordination.

Ms. Ruth Charo, World Bank Senior Education Specialist, and Mrs. Jacinta L. Agatha, Director CEMASTEA were also at the event.

The emphasis is on improving secondary student learning and the transition from primary to secondary education.

Government plans to build 962 classrooms in secondary schools in ASALs and marginalized areas.

Jwan thanked the World Bank for its assistance to the government in improving retention and quality of education in the country, as well as in ASALs and marginalized areas of the country through SEQIP.

SEQIP aims to reach 7,852 primary and 2,147 secondary schools in 110 sub-counties across 30 counties.

A total of 859 laboratories in 785 schools, as well as 1,843 eight-door sanitation facilities in 1783 primary schools, will be built.

One door in each of the schools will be modified to accommodate Special Needs Education (SNE).

The members of the joint mission, which include officials from the World Bank, Ministries of Education, and the National Treasury, will conduct a two-day assessment of the project’s implementation status on Thursday and Friday in five of the Project’s beneficiary counties.
