Kenya Kwanza Promise To Scrap Off CBC To End Confusion
Musalia Mudavadi, leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC), has stated that the Kenya Kwanza government will scrap the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to clear up confusion in the education system.
On Saturday, February 5, he spoke during the Kenya Kwanza Alliance meet the people tour of Kwale county.
“We need an education system that everyone understands. One which the teachers can well handle, teachers can manage well and is understood by the learners,” said Mudavadi.
Kenya has been using an 8-4-4 education system since it was implemented in 1985.
This system required students to complete eight years of primary school and four years of secondary school.
University degrees required at least four years to complete. The guiding philosophy of the entire system was self-reliance education.
Since then, there have been a few reviews and evaluations that have mostly addressed curriculum content issues and cleaned up areas where there was unnecessary overlap.
Since the system was discovered to be very academic and exam-oriented, these reviews have not adequately addressed fundamental issues.
Experts argue that if these issues are addressed, the education system has the potential to transform Kenyan society by increasing the productivity of all citizens and accelerating economic development.
This is the case with the new educational system (2-6-6-3). Pundits argue that the current system did not provide flexible educational pathways.
These are critical for identifying and nurturing learners’ aptitudes, talents, and interests early on, in order to prepare them for the world of work and career advancement.
This lack of flexibility was discovered to be increasing dropout rates, even among academically gifted students.
8-4-4 has been criticized for emphasizing too much on the competition for grades, more memorization and repetition of content during exams.
More knowledge and skills is applied via creativity, innovation, and problem-solving
With passive learners, the teacher is the primary source of knowledge.
