Education stakeholders have committed to incorporating coding as a subject of study beginning in primary school.

Since the approval and implementation of the syllabus for primary and secondary schools last year, participation has increased.

Coding is the process of translating human intentions into computer-understandable commands.

The lessons are delivered to learners via an interactive online classroom.

Last year, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) approved the coding curriculum.

Previously, President William Ruto stated that integrating coding lessons into the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will provide students with the computer programming skills necessary to fuel the fourth industrial revolution.

Ruto stated that coding will be incorporated into the curriculum in order to increase students’ technological literacy from elementary school through college.

This week, Graceland Schools in Nyahururu became the first private school in Kenya to implement comprehensive coding instruction for all grade levels beginning this month.

Grace Mwaura, the school’s directorpraised the government for legalizing the teaching of coding, stating that it is the foundation of a thriving digital economy.

“We are happy to be at the forefront of Kenya’s education system by recognizing the significance of digital literacy and coding in the twenty-first century. Our students will now have the chance to gain vital skills that will equip them for success in today’s world of rapid change,” she said.

She stated that the schools are dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for the difficulties and opportunities of the future labor market.

“Full deployment of KICD approved coding lessons is just one way in which the school is living up to this commitment to learners, parents, the community and the nation.,” said Mwaura

CEO of Safaricom Peter Ndegwa stated that the company partnered with Kodris Africa to teach the first ever government-approved coding syllabus.

Ndegwa stated that, in a digital world, we must develop a digital industrial program that enables us to equip our learners with the skills they will need in the future.

Employers throughout the world are increasingly demanding a digitally savvy labor force as a result of the rapid transformation brought on by technology.

It is anticipated that by 2030, 50 to 55 percent of all occupations in the country will require some level of digital skills, with the demand being driven mostly by businesses embracing digital technologies.

Countries such as the United States, China, England, Germany, and France, among many others in the industrialized world, have mandated coding instruction for first-grade learners.
