Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, MP for Marakwet West, has urged chiefs and their aides to take harsh action against parents who refuse to take their children to school.

Toroitich said that many children in the region were out of school for a variety of reasons, hence the need for a roundup operation to rescue and return them to school.

Speaking at Kapsowar boys’ secondary school, the representative remarked that parents were shirking their primary responsibility by denying their children’s right to education by allowing them to miss school.

By allowing their children to remain at home, he continued, parents inadvertently expose them to vices such as drug and substance abuse at a young age.

The MP also advised teachers to ensure that the curriculum is effectively covered and to avoid engaging in business activities during working hours, which would diminish their standing in the community.

Kipchumba urged the teachers to take pleasure in their profession, compete with one another, and perform well on national examinations.

He highlighted that numerous organizations and benefactors are eager to assist high-achieving kids in pursuit of their life goals.

“There are willing donors ready to sponsor hard-working students, but so far we have fallen short as a sub-county in getting the targeted results to qualify for such support, with only a few candidates managing to get the required points,” he added.

Torotoich also requested that the Sub-County security team regulate pool play in order to increase security and discourage children from wasting their time playing the game.
