Parents Commend Ruto Over Planned Review of CBC

Parents have commended President William Ruto’s decision to establish an education reform task committee to examine the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) as a timely intervention that will clear up ambiguities.

The National Parents Association is on record as supporting the new curriculum.

However, it has stated that certain ambiguities must be clarified to ensure its success.

A segment of the education sector’s stakeholders have protested and urged the new administration to eliminate CBC and restore the previous curriculum.

Parents and instructors say that the new approach imposes excessive homework on children and parents and is expensive.

In his inauguration address on September 13, President Ruto stated that a heated debate was occurring regarding CBC.

The parents’ group, which urged the government last week not to eliminate CBC, applauded the planned assessment, stating that it was timely given the implementation difficulties encountered.

The association chairman in Eldoret, Nicholas Maiyo, said that although they support the CBC deployment, there is an urgent need to fix the teething problems.

Parents complain that CBC is excessively expensive, citing a recent example in which students were asked to bring a chicken to school.

According to Mr. Maiyo, there is a significant disparity between what KICD told parents and how CBC was implemented in schools.

He stated that KICD should provide clear guidance on how parents can assist their children with homework.

He said parents had been subjected to a lot of challenges. Some are being inconvenienced while undertaking homework with their children late into the night.

However, Mr. Maiyo remained adamant that CBC should not be eliminated, claiming that doing so would be “catastrophic.”

“Scrapping CBC will not augur well with the parents because we are concerned about the end product, especially now when the world is very dynamic and the new model fits in well,” he said.
