North Eastern Named Hot Spot Of Exam Cheating.
According to investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the counties of Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera in the North-Eastern region have emerged as examination cheating hotspots.
According to the DCI’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, the region is to blame for the growing number of cases of illegal exposure of national examination materials.
Almost all of the exam materials for the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) recovered during a recent crackdown on examination cheaters were impounded in the three counties.
Following the results of a forensic examination on the mobile phones of four students arrested on March 20 over their possible involvement in the crime, the DCI designated the three counties as notorious for exam leakage.
DCI chief George Kinoti stated that the four suspects, who are university students, were responsible for the distribution of leaked KCSE materials.
According to Kinoti, the students are pawns in a large web of examination fraudsters that includes teachers, invigilators, and even local security officers.
The revelations come amid growing concern about the early release of examination questions.
More arrests, including of teachers, are being made during this year’s KCSE examinations, as the number of mobile phones confiscated during test administration continues to rise.
Cases of impersonation have also been reported, raising concerns among stakeholders that the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and Ministry of Education may have become complacent.
