Mount Kenya University will host a three-day conference on peace and security this week, from Wednesday to Friday, as preparations for the upcoming August elections ramp up.

More than 500 delegates are expected to attend both physically and virtually the Second International Peace, Security, and Social Enterprise Conference.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, the event’s chief guest, will officially open the three-day event at Thika’s MKU Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre.

The theme of the conference is “The role of universities, public and private sectors in peacebuilding for socioeconomic development.”

According to MKU pro-chancellor Dr Vincent Gaitho, who will also be the event’s host, Day 1 of the conference will focus on Academia and Peace.

The role of international partners and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in supporting peace initiatives will be discussed on Day 2, and the role of the public and private sectors in maintaining peace will be discussed on Day 3.

Every election year, MKU will host a peace conference to encourage sober debate in the country during political campaigns.

Rev Dr Samuel Kobia, Chairman of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), Prof Bitange Ndemo, Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium, Ms Carole Kariuki, CEO of Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), Daystar University Vice-Chancellor Dr Laban Ayiro, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) director, Dr Charles Ong’ondo, Prof Hubert Gijzen, UNESCO Regional Director, and others will speak at the conference.

Dr Vincent Gaitho, Pro-Chancellor of Mount Kenya University (MKU), has urged Kenyans to avoid intolerance and animosity during the election campaign.

“Voting happens on a single day. It is just an event. People should be able to go back to their businesses (immediately after),” argues Dr Gaitho, adding: “Children should be able to go to school without fearing that the prevailing peace will collapse.”

Elections, he contends, should not cause social upheaval.
