MKU-Funded Police Post Opens in Thika Town

Thika town, situated near Nairobi and two major highways, has been facing security risks due to the prevalence of criminal activities, particularly during the night.

In response, a community policing facility was established in partnership between the national government and Mount Kenya University (MKU) adjacent to the university, aimed at ending muggings of students and other road users.

Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a, who officiated the opening of the facilities, noted the town’s growing population of colleges, emphasizing the need for heightened security measures to ensure a peaceful existence for learners and locals.

Aside from the patrol base, a new traffic police office has also been constructed to address congestion issues at the Thika Police Station. Kiambu County Police Commander, Perminus Kioi, believes that closer police presence builds trust and cooperation among locals in ending crime.

Thika has been experiencing major security issues such as theft and the snatching of mobile phones and personal items by criminals riding motorbikes, as well as violent robberies, physical assault in the streets, drugs and substance abuse, online fraud and conning.

The establishment of the police patrol base is expected to provide regular patrols and a rapid response from the police in the event of an emergency. This, in turn, is expected to reduce crime as community members will be able to provide information about suspicious activities quickly.

The MKU Vice Chancellor, Prof Deogratius Jaganyi, said that the university is committed to partnering with security organs to ensure the safety and security of its students, as well as the community. Through capacity development in criminology and security studies, the university aims to promote peace and justice both locally and internationally.

Prof Jaganyi emphasized that the success of the initiative would depend on the full involvement of everyone, including volunteering information or security intelligence to the security organs to help combat crime.

The police patrol base in Thika town, built through a partnership between the national government and MKU, aims to address the rising security concerns caused by the prevalence of criminal activities in the area. The facility is expected to provide regular patrols, a rapid response from the police in case of an emergency, and reduce crime by enabling community members to report suspicious activities quickly.

The establishment of the patrol base and the new traffic police office is expected to provide a safer environment for learners and locals.
