The Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu made his first appearance at the national drama festival since he took office, as he graced the event at Shimo la Tewa school.

The gala festivals commenced on April 20th and will run until April 29th, with participants from ECD, primary, secondary schools, and colleges presenting a variety of items including play, narratives, spoken word, choral verse, solo verse, creative cultural dances, and mimes.

Machogu was joined by Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang, KICD CEO Charles Ongondo, and Director General Elyas Abdi at the festival. Principal Administrative Secretary, Ministry of ICT Erick Kiraithe was also present.

Several teams will be selected to present at the State House in Mombasa, where President William Ruto will also be in attendance.

This event marked the first drama festival in the country since the Covid-19 pandemic forced the Ministry of Education to suspend all co-curricular activities in schools, from primary, and secondary to higher learning institutions.

However, drama, music, and sports activities resumed in schools in November 2021, after being on hold for almost a year and a half. Additionally, drama and music festivals resumed in institutions of higher learning in June 2022, after a closure of two years.

The first festival, held at Kenyatta University’s Kitui campus, brought together seven universities. The resumption of such events is significant, as co-curricular activities play an important role in shaping students’ social, physical, and mental development, and can also enhance academic performance.
