Scrap Off CBC, KUPPET Tells Government

The Kenya Union of post-primary education teachers (KUPPET) seems not to be satisfied with the competency-based curriculum (CBC).

Led by Nandi Branch, KUPPET executive secretary Paul Rotich wants the government to scrap CBC insisting it’s costly to parents.

“As we are talking now a committee in the formation of the task force on the CBC is on, and we want to appeal to the people who will be brought on board to have time with the stakeholders and understand the concern of the child, parents and all other stakeholders.”

Speaking during the KUPPET annual general meeting held in Kapsabet, the teachers said they were not ready for the curriculum adding that no proper consultation from education stakeholders was done before being rolled out.

“As we are talking today CBC is an amorphous arrangement particularly to just enrich a few. We want to say no to CBC, it should come when we are ready and when the animal has taken shape.”

According to the recommendation made by team Nandi teachers, most of them are preferring the original 844 system which Incorporated cognitive and at the same time competency.

“As per now, it is amorphous. Teachers don’t know what it is, the parents are suffering, the children are suffering and we are saying no to CBC.”

“We want something with shape, we want teachers to be trained. The mistake the government did when rolling out CBC was putting the card before the horse. We, teachers, are not ready.”

“This year in the coming year 2023 we expect two groups of admission. Those who will be admitted through CBC and those who will be admitted through 844. These schools are not prepared, We don’t have infrastructures, teachers are not enough, let the government suspend it.”

Last week during the 94th edition of the Kenya Music Festival held in Kisumu County Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua was the guest of honor.

When he took to the podium Rigathi assured students, parents, and teachers that the government has formed a task force to review the competency-based curriculum, CBC, not with a view to scrapping it.

“Our new government will very soon be unveiling a task force to look at educational reforms including CBC with a view not of abolishing it, but reviewing it so that we retain what is good, and improve what is causing concern.” Said the second in command.

On his part, the Education, CS Professor George Magoha urged the government led by President William Ruto as the schools reopen this week for the third and the final term this year, that they will make available the money due for the education sector, and he will ensure a smooth transition of the CBC.

“I would want to commit the government that as schools open next week on Monday, the government of his Excellency William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua will make available maybe within a week, the money that is due to the basic education sector as has been the practice.”

“It is our duty to ensure that there is a very smooth transition and therefore if you see me a little bit hyperactive, it is because I want to ensure that Nobody messes around with the
examination term during your reign.”
