Kuppet Wants Entire Kitui Listed as Hardship Area
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) wants the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to include the entire Kitui as a hardship area.
Kitui-Kuppet branch says teachers in the area work in an exceptionally challenging and demanding environment and should receive a hardship allowance.
Kioko Mutia, executive secretary of Kitui Kuppet, opined that it would be prudent for the government to provide all teachers with commensurate incentives to encourage them to continue working.
The Kitui Kuppet annual general meeting was held at the Kitui Kefri center.
The official stated that if the government categorized the entire Kitui county as dry and semiarid territories with associated incentives and advantages, teacher understaffing would be sorted.
According to him, the existing classification of only three Kitui sub-counties as Asal regions is erroneous, as teachers throughout the county work under extremely difficult conditions.
According to the official, only Mutitu North, Tseikuru, and Mumoni sub-counties are designated as Asals in Kitui.
Mutia also commended Charles Nguna, MP for Mwingi West, for introducing a petition in the last parliament to have Kitui recognized as an Asal.
He hoped the relevant task force would shortly reevaluate Kitui during a visit.
Moses Nthurima, deputy sectary general of the Kuppet, stated that the inflation rate in Kenya is intolerable and that the Kenya Kwanza administration should consider increasing teacher wages and allowances.
He added as soon as the new administration settles down, it should start engaging the teachers’ teachers union as it has been long since teachers had a salary boost, and inflation affects them hard.

Nthurima added that Kuppet applauded the government’s move to audit the Competency-Based Curriculum because the success of any curriculum is contingent on the participation of all stakeholders.
The insider said the government should involve teachers in the task force to evaluate the CBC because they have expressed many questions and should obtain answers as stakeholders.
