KUPPET Want TSC Promote Teachers in Job Groups C3 to C5
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) wants the government to pay teachers in accordance with the CBA matrix approved by the union and TSC in 2017 so that all teachers can benefit equally.
KUPPET also requests that the TSC establish a clear promotion path for Diploma teachers at both the primary and secondary levels.
Orwa Jasolo, executive secretary of the Migori chapter of KUPPET, has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to commence the promotion of teachers on an equal basis across all existing job groups.
The unionist stated that TSC must devise a new strategy for incorporating classroom teachers into the promotion matrix since they bear the noble responsibility of enhancing the academic achievement of children at the school level.
According to Jasolo, teachers have endured incalculable miseries as a result of TSC’s haphazard promotions, with the bulk of them remaining in the same job groups for extended periods of time.
The executive secretary stated that teachers in job groups C3 to C5, who make up 80% of post-primary school classroom teachers, were not granted a significant portion of the TSC’s recently advertised promotions.
He lamented that the majority of grade C3 teachers have been in the same position for five to twenty-two years, despite the fact that relatively few vacancies were advertised for the same job category.
Orwa emphasized that only 3,000 teachers will be promoted out of a total of over 110,000 post-primary teachers, which he described as a drop in the ocean.
“Most of these advertised jobs are those at the higher grades, set to benefit only a few, while majority of the classroom teachers at lower grades will remain stagnated at the same job group, with neither a pay rise nor any form of advancement in their careers,” noted Orwa.
