KUPPET Rejects Ruto’s 3% Salary Deduction on Teachers.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has expressed its opposition to the government’s proposed three percent housing fund levy. The union claims that teachers are already heavily taxed and warns of potential consequences if the government moves forward with the plan.
During a press conference at the union headquarters in Nairobi, the Kuppet deputy secretary-general stated that they must act quickly to prevent the implementation of the housing fund levy. He went on to say that if the government is in dire financial straits, it should not borrow from teachers.
“If the government is broke, let it not borrow from teachers,” he said.
The Kuppet National Governing Council has scheduled a meeting for this upcoming weekend to discuss the matter further. The union believes that the proposed levy will cause a significant financial burden on teachers who are already struggling to make ends meet.
The Kuppet is not the only group to oppose the government’s plan. The Federation of Kenya Employers has also voiced its concerns, stating that the levy will hurt the private sector and ultimately result in job losses.
However, the Kuppet argues that the levy is unnecessary and unfair to teachers, who already contribute a significant portion of their salaries towards taxes. The union is urging the government to reconsider the proposal and find alternative ways to finance its affordable housing plan.
