KNEC Faces Senate Inquiry Over Nonpayment of Teachers.

The Senate Education Committee in Kenya has requested that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO, David Njengere, explain why teachers who supervised, invigilated and marked the 2022 KCSE and KCPE exams have not been paid.

The Senate committee has also proposed the creation of a special fund to pay teachers who attend to students during the exams.

Teachers’ unions have reported that more than 50,000 teachers who performed exam-related duties have not been paid.

During a debate in the Senate, nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri stated that KNEC should explain the delay in payment to the teachers. She also added that the situation shows a lack of gratitude for the teachers’ services.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina suggested that a penalty be imposed on KNEC for delayed payments. He further stated that teachers make sacrifices by marking the exams and should be paid on time.

Senator Beatrice Ogola expressed her disappointment in the situation and said that the role teachers play in invigilating and marking exams is critical for students’ progression from one level to another.

She added that failure to pay the invigilators and markers of the exams shows a lack of gratitude to the teachers who perform these duties.

She stated that teachers should be paid on time after marking exams since they make a lot of sacrifices and that the delay in payment indicates that the education system has a lot of problems.

The proposed special fund would utilize money paid by candidates to take examinations to pay teachers who invigilate, supervise, and mark exams.

The committee believes that KNEC should explain its deployment processes and describe the steps it is taking to ensure teachers are paid promptly.

The delays in payment have caused significant concern and distress among teachers, and the Senate committee is urging KNEC to act promptly to rectify the situation.
