The first-ever community library in Kisumu County will be located at the Korando Educational Center in Kisumu West Sub County.

To kick off the endeavor, 4,000 books of all genres have been donated to the facility.

The library will provide free services to community members under the direction of Korando Educational Center, a non-profit organization.

The provision of 2,000 reading materials for young students by the Kiwimbi Community Centre and Library in Busia County bolstered the effort.

The establishment of the Korando Community Library satisfies Lakeside County’s desire to promote a reading culture among youth.

It will be a copy of the Kiwimbi Community Library in Teso North Sub County’s Amagoro town.

The institution provides essential academic help to impoverished students in the rural parts of Busia who lack professors and learning resources to improve their academic performance.

During the book donation ceremony, Governor Anyang Nyong’o stated that the initiative is part of a larger partnership between Kisumu and Kiwimbi institutions to foster reading literacy among the most vulnerable young students.

Prof. Nyong’o emphasized that his government and the community-based group work closely together.

His administration is committed to replicating some of Kiwimbi’s programs in Kisumu’s slums and rural areas, where most students are economically disadvantaged.

“There is a great need for literacy development in the rural areas where students are at a big disadvantage, not having the resources and books that the students in schools in towns have,” Nyong’o said.

This is a result of the county officials’ October 2021 visit to the established Kiwimbi community library to investigate collaboration opportunities in the education sector.

Dolfine Oliech, the director of Korando Educational Centre, stated that the center has sufficient employees and books to establish a library for the benefit of the surrounding community and to provide learners with free access to additional learning materials and resources.

“We are fortunate to get a shipment of books that will go a long way in educating neighborhood people. Oliech stated that with the donation, Korando now has over 4,000 books to begin a community library similar to Kiwimbi Library.
