As a result of their victory in a countywide Maths competition in Embu County, girls are well-positioned to excel in STEM subjects.

Dr. Kawira Millien, dean of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences at the University of Embu, was impressed by the number of girls coming from Embu County schools and expressed confidence in their ability to excel in STEM subjects.

In a mathematics contest held at the University of Embu, the girls from various schools in Embu County outperformed the boys.

Dr. Kawira stated that the county education sector has a significant responsibility to improve the academic performance of boys.

“The boys are an important aspect of our learning and teaching and the indication of today, calls us to seriously get on the ground and get the boy child on board,“ she said, adding that elaborate mechanisms must be put in place by education stakeholders in the county to ensure that both the girl and boy child perform equally well in mathematics.

Kawira added that the performance of boys in mathematics must be evaluated because the subject is integral to the majority of the courses they may wish to pursue.

She stated that women have the potential to excel in STEM courses, but they rely on machines and technology to achieve parity with men.

Kawira remarked, “We depend on machines and technology to compete with men and once we get this technology on our side as women and girls, we shall do the things that are preventing us from exploring every aspect of STEM.

Dr. Samuel Ndirangu, dean of the School of Agriculture, stated that the mathematics competition will be held annually and that its creation was necessitated by the need to promote mathematics in the schools of Embu County, where the majority of students struggle to earn the minimum grade of C+ required to enroll in courses requiring mathematics.

Neema Nyakisio, a student from Kitengela who won the mathematics competition held at the University of Embu, explained that her passion for mathematics practice has enabled her to excel in the field.

She urged boys in various Embu schools to embrace Mathematics and increase their practice in order to achieve excellence in the subject.
