In a 59-page bulletin, George Omore Magoha, the departing Education Cabinet Secretary, defended the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) by asserting that it meets contemporary market expectations.

Recalling the 8-4-4 would hinder the Ministry’s efforts to restructure the education system, as stated in Volume 1 of the CBC Implementation Bulletin.

Magoha emphasized that the objective of the printed newsletter was to create a forum for the exchange of information and knowledge and to enable individuals to not only comprehend and appreciate what is being done but also express themselves freely on topics related to the CBC’s implementation.

He emphasized that education is a shared responsibility and that all stakeholders must comprehend the execution and what is expected of them.

Magoha emphasized that CBC is essential because it equips the newest generation of students with the knowledge and ability to study and relearn.

“The current environment is radically different from what the 8-4-4 system of education was created to respond to.

"We are now in a knowledge-based society faced with constantly changing challenges, constraints and opportunities. This needs a new kind of education,” Magoha says in the bulletin.

He recommended proper investment in CBC, asserting that the nation will also achieve its long-term economic growth goals, which fit with President William Ruto’s objectives.

“Kenya has set in motion an ambitious but essential, review and reform of its education system.”

“The goal is to equip the students with the requisite knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable them to contribute in meaningful ways to society,” Magoha stated.

Fatuma Chege, the principal secretary for education, echoed Magoha’s statement by stating that the government had continued to adopt a multisectoral approach in drafting the essential policy documents and guidelines to aid in the transition to CBC.

Chege noted in her message to parents that students will possess the skills, values, information, and attitudes necessary to effectively address local, regional, global, social, cultural, economic, and technological needs.

She added that parents’ responsibility is to advise their children but not to do their assigned duties for them.

Julius Jwan, an administrative specialist at the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education, noted that the Ministry had invested in enhancing kids’ teaching and learning environments.

Jwan stated that other initiatives are in the works to equip students with greater skills and reduce the cost of CBC.

Their statement arrived days after President Ruto informed the people that he would establish a task team to investigate implementation flaws in the education system.
