The Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF) in Kenya outlines the vision and mission of the curriculum reforms.

The vision of the curriculum reform is to develop:
“An engaged, an empowered and ethical citizen”.
The Mission is:
“To nurture the potential of every learner”.

The country has made a shift towards a competency-based curriculum. Seven core competencies have been identified for Basic Education namely:

Communication and Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Creativity and Imagination, Citizenship, Digital Literacy, Learning to learn and Self Efficacy.

Learners will be provided with opportunities to participate and excel in learning and nurturing of their talents.

Curriculum designs have been developed to aid the implementation of the Basic Education Curriculum Framework. They outline the National Goals of Education, The Middle School General learning outcomes as well as the Subject General and Specific learning outcomes.

The curriculum designs also outline suggested learning experiences, key inquiry questions, assessment rubrics, pertinent and contemporary issues to be infused and integrated and
community service learning activities among others.

As citizens of a democratic society, the primary goal of Social Studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good.

The course is designed to prepare students for national and global citizenship, lifelong learning, and active participation in society.
