The governor of Baringo, Benjamin Cheboi, has urged all institutions in the country that grant scholarships and bursaries to adopt a standardized method of identifying the most worthy recipients.

Cheboi, speaking in Kabarnet town on Tuesday during the presentation of 16 recipients of full scholarships under the Equity Wings to fly program, emphasized the urgent need to adopt a mechanism of selection to prevent duplications that could harm other deserving instances.

The governor stated that if the selection and identification criteria were simplified, the program would be able to achieve its goal of altering the lives of a greater number of recipients, as those covered by scholarships would leave more opportunities in the bursary program.

“This is a good opportunity for us to discuss with all those who are giving out bursaries and scholarships to see if we can develop a common approach of identifying the neediest cases,” he said.

Cheboi, along by his deputy Eng. Felix Maiyo and CEC for Education Rev. Simon Kiuta, lamented the fact that many eligible and underprivileged students in the county miss out on these funds due to a faulty selection procedure.

To prevent duplication among the many banks, governments, and support groups, he advocated extensive dialogue prior to the awarding of such funds.

Cheboi stated that beginning next month, his administration will distribute a Sh30 million bursary to learners in secondary and higher schools who are not receiving assistance from other groups in order to allow more students from the region to pursue an education.

He advised the recipients to maintain a high level of discipline when they enter their various secondary schools and to lend a hand to others in the future when they achieve success.

“If someone holds your hand to cross a river make sure one day you hold another hand when you become great people in the society,” the Baringo boss advised the beneficiaries.

In his remarks, Equity Bank Kabarnet branch manager Micah Bett stated that the 16 students selected for the 2023 class of the wings to fly sponsorship program are from each of the seven sub-counties in the county due to their outstanding performance in the recently concluded Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations.

He challenged the students, some of whom are victims of gender-based violence, to utilize the financial aid provided to them in order to attain the highest degree of education.

This year, according to the chairman of the selection committee, Samuel Bungei, the number of applications in the region increased.

168 applications did not qualify for the scholarship, according to Bungei, who appealed to the community’s well-wishers and business organizations to help fund the education of the less fortunate members of society.
