4800 Sanitary Towels Supplied To Girls School
4800 sanitary towels were supplied by Society for Refugees and Youths in Africa (SoRY Africa) to approximately 250 students from Emuhuwa Girls Secondary School in Kakamega.
The Organization, in collaboration with the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), gave sanitary towels to pupils whose requests were submitted via suggestion boxes.
Sarah Otanga, the school’s Deputy Principal, stated that the majority of girls had requested sanitary towels through the suggestion boxes.
“The distribution is a relief to the girls, most of whom were uncomfortable sitting in class. The school is in a rural area and the majority of students come from humble backgrounds where even paying fees is a challenge,” she noted.
Emmanuel Kelly, the organization’s founder, stated that they advocate for gender equality, climate action, peace, and reconciliation through rural arts and culture development.
“We have discovered that most of the young girls who are in rural schools are facing challenges so we are trying to support them,” he noted.
He stated that in addition to distributing sanitary towels, SoRY Africa coaches the girls, while KFCB educates them on the importance of consuming clean material.
Other schools, like as Kituvu secondary school in Machakos and Ruaraka secondary school, have also received sanitary towels from the organization. According to him, the organization was created in 2020.
Angeline Owino, a member of the school’s board, stated that the ‘Keeping Hope Alive’-themed activity is intended to empower girls to maintain personal cleanliness throughout menstruation.
She added that peer working groups, mentoring, and counseling sessions are also utilized to encourage students to prioritize their education.
“We also give an opportunity for the girls to network with other youths across the country whom we are working with in the programme,” she noted.
