The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, has announced plans to recruit 1,300 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers in Kenya to address the critical shortage of staff in the sector.

This move comes after the Public Service Commission promoted 3,269 TVET trainers to fill the deficit. The National Treasury has allocated funds for the recruitment of trainers in the 2023/2024 annual budget, and vacancies will be advertised accordingly.

The CS hopes that this effort will expand the TVET sub-sector, create job opportunities, and meet the increasing demand for skilled labour in the country.

During the fourth graduation ceremony of the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP) in Mombasa, the Principal Secretary for TVETs, Esther Muhoria, announced the government’s plans to recruit more trainers.

In her speech, she urged for more collaboration and encouraged the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions to restructure TVET training to competence-based skilling.

She also suggested that TVETs should design demand-driven programmes, benchmark, collaborate, and partner with other top institutions to create globally recognized programmes that are relevant to the competitive labour market.

The CS noted that the shortage of trainers in TVET institutions is a significant challenge for the sector. He stated that the current establishment of trainers in TVET institutions is 6,201, indicating a shortage of 8,817 trainers.

As a result, the recommended trainer-to-trainee ratio of 1:30 for business courses and 1:20 for STEM courses cannot be met.

The government’s initiative to recruit more trainers is expected to provide TVET trainees with dual certifications when they graduate, giving them an edge over their competitors in the marketplace.

The CS hopes that this effort will create job opportunities and meet the increasing demand for skilled labour in Kenya.

The government’s intention is to expand the TVET sub-sector and ensure that the programmes are globally recognized, relevant, and competitive in the labour market.
