Tom Mboya University Granted Charter
The Tom Mboya University community in Homa-Bay County is overjoyed after President Uhuru Kenyatta granted the institution a charter.
Since its inception in October 2016, the institution has served as a constituent college of Maseno University.
After receiving the charter, the institution has evolved into a full-fledged university, and its name has been changed to Tom Mboya University. This means it will grant degrees.
According to the college’s principal, Professor Charles Ochola, the institution has three main faculties and 27 academic programs. Biological and physical sciences, business and economics, and education are among the faculties.
He stated that the institution is now capable of launching its own academic programs.
According to Prof. Ochola, the university has received approval to offer 39 academic programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in its accreditation report.
According to the principal, the institution’s student population has grown from 140 when it first opened in 2016 to 5,000 now.
He stated that the university will contribute to the area’s economic growth, noting that businesses are now flourishing in Homa Bay town as a result of the growing student population.
“If every student spends the least amount they can spend, Sh100, on food per day, it means there is a minimum circulation of Sh500, 000 in a day in this town. The is a source of livelihood for many people in the community,” said Prof Ochola.
Tom Mboya University was named after the late Tom Mboya, a legendary trade unionist from Rusinga Island in Homa Bay County.
Ochola stated that they want to ensure that Tom Mboya’s vision for the university is realized.
“Tom Mboya believed in airlifting of students from Kenya to overseas countries. We want to engage in international and local partnerships to ensure we airlift students from overseas countries to Kenya to join this university,” he added.
The handshake between Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Presidential candidate Raila Odinga and President Kenyatta will be remembered because of the charter, according to the head of Homa Bay County Bunge La Wenye Nchi Walter Opiyo and spokesman Evance Oloo.

“This is the major project we have acquired as Homa Bay residents through the handshake,” Oloo said.
According to Opiyo, the institution will provide local residents with access to higher education.
“Our sons and daughters will be cushioned from traveling long distances in search of higher education,” Opiyo said.
