University Fires Lecturers for Sexual Harassment

Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest higher learning institution, has fired six staff members for sexual harassment.

The six individuals, comprising one subordinate staff and five teaching staff, were implicated in sexual harassment scandals that occurred between 2018 and 2022.

The university’s Gender Mainstreaming Directorate revealed that it had been investigating 30 cases of sexual harassment, and out of those, six cases had been dismissed, one case was acquitted, five cases had been concluded involving three staff and two students, while the remaining cases were still under investigation.

The directorate stated that sexual harassment cases at Makerere University involved lecturers to lecturers, students to students, as well as administrators/lecturers to students.

The most common type of sexual harassment involved lecturer-student sexual relationships, which have been linked to issues such as missing marks.

The directorate dismissed claims that student dress codes contributed to sexual harassment cases, saying that reducing the problem of sexual harassment to dress codes was merely addressing the issue’s surface.

To combat the problem, the directorate announced the introduction of a digital-based system for uploading all student results online, making them easily accessible.
