UK University to Build Six Campuses in Kenya at Ksh.158B Cost

The University of Manchester in the UK has unveiled plans to launch a Ksh158 billion programme aimed at building six healthcare campuses across Kenya.

The campuses will offer courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing, and will be established in Kisii University, Maseno University, Masinde Muliro University, Egerton University, Bomet University and Kibabii University.

The programme is designed to promote the development of a centre of excellence for healthcare education and training in Western and Central Kenya. The move comes in response to a predicted exponential increase in non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic diseases in the region.

Manchester University Vice Dean for Internationalisation, Professor Keith Brennon, stated that the establishment of an education pipeline capable of delivering a modern, flexible and resilient healthcare workforce was an urgent priority within Kenya.

Brennon also emphasised the importance of developing a resilient and flexible multi-professional health workforce with strong inter-professional working in Kenya and the East African Region.

The initiative aims to create a new model for health education and training based on modern methods, distance learning, competency-based in-service training and assessments to drive further changes in Kenya and the wider region.

The move has been welcomed by the Vice Chancellor of Kisii University, Prof John Akama, who believes that the project will be transformative for the Western Region and Kenya.

Meanwhile, Óbuda University in Hungary has launched a tech and knowledge hub office in Kenya to support students and organisations willing to study engineering and IT courses.

The university will offer courses including mechatronics engineering, cyber security, computer science engineering and electrical engineering.

The move follows President William Ruto securing Ksh6.2 billion in funding from the Hungarian Government on March 7.
