Two form three students from Njenga Karume Secondary School in Molo sub-county were arrested on Tuesday after being found in possession of cannabis Sativa.

The juveniles, aged 16 and 17, were apprehended after a tip-off that they had brought the prohibited drug to school, according to Directorate of Criminal Investigation boss George Kinoti.

The 16-year-old suspected of being the mastermind was apprehended with four rolls, while his accomplice was apprehended with a half-smoked joint with the intent of distributing it to other students.

Detectives in the town, according to Kinoti, are on high alert after intelligence reports indicated that school-aged teenagers had been recruited into a drug trafficking ring led by a notorious suspect who has since fled.

“A specialized team drawn from DCI’s Anti Narcotics unit will be conducting a major crackdown in the town aimed at flushing out the drug traffickers, who are targeting school children and using them as agents to traffic the prohibited weed,” Kinoti said.

According to Kinoti, marijuana is a prohibited drug, and being found in possession, trafficking, or growing the plant carries harsh penalties of up to 20 years in prison.

This comes as six suspects were apprehended by police on Wednesday last week in Nairobi’s Bridgestone and Columbia neighborhoods along the Mathare River.

Starehe Sub-County Police Commander William Sirengo and the OCS Mathare Police Station conducted a raid in these areas and apprehended suspects while others escaped arrest.

“Drugs, which included; one kg of heroine, five kilograms of cannabis sativa and illicit brew were recovered,” Sirengo said.

He noted in his report that the suspects had several needles, alcohol pads, a dagger, and NSP Kits.

The OCS labeled the areas as hotspots for drug trafficking, drug abuse, and illegal gambling.

The raid was intended to clear out the dens that had become a nuisance in the neighborhoods.

A gambling machine was also recovered during the operation.

Sirengo and his team have been commended by the National Police Service for their efforts to eradicate criminal activity in Starehe Sub-County.

The six suspects are being held and are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Cases of illegal drug use and gambling have increased in recent years, despite ongoing efforts by officials to curb the practice.

The suspects were apprehended in May by sleuths from the DCI’s Anti-narcotics Unit at an apartment in Nyayo Estate in Embakasi, Nairobi.

The authority issued a stun warning, discouraging youth participation in gambling and illegal drug use and possession.
