3,000 TVET trainers To Be Hired – Margaret Mwakima
Dr Margaret Mwakima, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Vocational and Technical Training (VTT), has said that plans were in the works to hire 3,000 TVET trainers to fill the existing void and ensure that the institutions play an important role in national development.
Speaking at Kisumu National Polytechnic during the 9th Graduation Ceremony, the PS noted that enrollment in TVET institutions increased from 55,945 in 2013 to 249,316 in 2021.
Mwakima attributed the increase to the government’s commitment to expanding the sector, which increased the number of institutions from 52 in 2013 to 238 in 2021 at a cost of Sh10.6 billion.
She added that the Sh10.3 billion capitation and the Sh11.1 billion Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) for students have rekindled interest in TVET institutions.
Dr. Mwakima also stated that the government has provided a Sh2 billion conditional grant to Vocational Training Colleges (VTCs) in order to increase enrollment.
She added that the money being channelled directly to counties will ensure that the institutions offer standard and quality programs to benefit youths across the country.
“There is a need to train a critical mass of technologists, technicians and artisans in TVET institutions to achieve aspirations in social-economic growth of the country. Therefore, TVET institutions are expected to design programmes to bridge identified skill gaps in the dynamic industry,” she said.
Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o has requested that the government halt the conversion of TVET institutions into universities.

He added that the institutions play an important role in addressing various skill gaps in the country and that his county government is expanding VTCs to increase enrollment.
“In the financial year 2020-2021, we have established six VTCs bringing the total to 26. We are supporting needy learners with bursaries and scholarships to join the institutions,” he said.
