TSC Warns Parents Against Harassing Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Narok County has expressed concern over the increasing cases of violence against teachers, which has adversely affected their performance.

According to the County TSC Director, Jane Mutua, several incidents have been reported in her office where teachers have been mistreated by parents in the presence of their students, leading to demotivation among the teachers.

Addressing the residents of Dikirr in Trans Mara East Sub County area in a public gathering attended by the County Commissioner, Isaac Masinde, Ms. Mutua said that a number of parents have been approaching her office demanding the transfer of teachers without concrete reasons.

“When a delegation come to my office seeking the transfer of a teacher, I inquire from them the good and wrong things the teachers have done. Sometime the good is far more than the wrongs,” he said.

Ms. Mutua emphasized that teachers are human and require motivation to perform well. She called upon parents to speak positively about teachers in front of their children, so that they learn to respect them in school.

She reiterated that parents need not offer teachers monetary incentives, but a kind word of encouragement would go a long way in boosting their morale.

The Director highlighted the critical role of teachers in mentoring children, saying that a well-educated and mentored child is an asset to the family, community, and the country at large.

She urged parents to refrain from speaking negatively about teachers in front of their children, as this could have adverse effects on their character development.

“Before you open your mouth as a parent to condemn a teacher in front of your children, think twice. Some of us are the way we are today because we choose our teachers to be our role models,” she said.

Narok County Director of Education, Apuko Apollo, reminded parents that a child’s discipline begins at home, and they should ensure that their children are well-mannered at home.

He warned against fighting in the presence of children, as it could have negative impacts on their education and character development.

Commissioner Masinde urged parents to ensure that all their children attend school, as it is wrong to keep a school-going child at home while others are busy learning in school.
