As the reopening date approaches, questions have arisen over, among other details, the guidelines, infrastructure, and teacher utilization.

TSC has begun the process of assigning teachers to Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

The teachers will help to fill the significant teacher shortages.

While some parents may prefer to transfer their children to other schools, the JSS transition is expected to provide some issues in terms of infrastructure and teacher utilization.

To help find teachers who will teach in Grade 7 beginning this month, TSC has invited primary school head teachers to fill out and submit a form.

Primary school heads have been asked to submit the required details by the Commission.

Ruto stated that Permanent, Pensionable, and Intern teachers are being hired based on the recommendation of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to alleviate the teacher shortage.

‘‘We gave TSC the latitude to decide the number of teachers needed to help the Grade Seven transition, how many will assist in the continuing secondary education, and those who will go to the primary.

“The expertise in the Commission is in a better place to tell us where the teachers will be posted,’’ Ruto said.

In the next five years, the government will hire an additional 110 thousand teachers, as promised by the head of state.

‘‘As a government, we took the decision to hire an extra 30, 000 teachers to ensure the transition is smooth.

"We are going to hire another 30,000 teachers with the availability of resources to make sure our education system is seamless,’’ Ruto said.

The decision to host the Competency-Based Curriculum’s (CBC) junior secondary school level in primary schools has allowed junior secondary teachers the opportunity to be promoted, provided they have improved their PTE certificates to Diploma and Degree certificates.

For teachers who will be posted to junior secondary schools, 9,000 of the 30,550 available positions are reserved for permanent and pensionable lengths of service.

For the recruitment of junior teacher interns, an additional 21,550 spots were designated.

TSC insists that only primary school teachers who meet the qualifications for primary school deployment will be allowed to teach in JSS.

In junior secondary schools, the following will be allowed to teach:

– Diploma and Degree in Special Needs Education

– Those with Early Childhood Development Education Diploma and Degree.

– Diploma and Degree in Education (Primary option)

– Degree in Education (Secondary Option) but lacking C+ at KCSE or C+ in teaching subjects.

The aforementioned credentials are said to be held by about 17,000 primary school teachers.

There is a possibility that many primary school teachers will have the opportunity to advance to JSS.

The deployment of primary school teachers in JSS was prompted by revelations that TSC had assigned one teacher per class in the grade level.

The Commission will train teachers who will teach Grade 7 learners this month on the following subjects that will be taught in the JSS.
