The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) allowances for teachers fall into two categories: remunerative and reimbursable.

Remunerative allowances are included in the salary, while reimbursable allowances are refundable upon request.

i) Remunerative allowances are divided into two types:

1 . Automatic allowances, which encompass

The TSC house allowance is the most popular and is paid monthly to all teachers. The standard criteria for the allowance are the teacher’s employment grade and workstation.

The house allowance is greater the higher the job grade. Monthly payments of the hardship allowance for teachers are made to the educators. This allowance is given to a teacher who works in a region prone to insecurity, high risks, and a harsh climate.

The commuter allowance is also paid monthly based on the teacher’s work group. Teachers in Kenya also receive an annual leave allowance, which differs marginally from the other benefits. Additionally, a teacher’s grade affects their pay.

2. Paid on application allowances

Allowances paid upon request include five options. As the name suggests, these are not routinely applied to a teacher’s monthly or annual salary but must be requested.

  • Responsibility allowance mostly for school heads.
  • Special duty allowance for teachers in administrative roles in arid areas. Teachers appointed to administrative posts by the commission and assigned to arid and semi-arid regions receive a special duty allowance
  • Readers allowance for visually impaired teachers employing qualified readers,
  • Interpreters allowance for deaf teachers on study leave,
  • Special school allowance for special needs education specialists, and
  • Transfer allowance for teachers relocated by the Commission.

ii) Reimbursable expenses are expenses the Commission repays to teachers. These include:
  • Travel expenses, which are reimbursed under specific circumstances such as interdiction revocation, interview attendance, first posting outside the home district, travel from a duty station outside the home district upon retirement, and travel to and from home for teachers in hardship areas during school holidays, provided their home district is outside the hardship area. Teachers must apply using prescribed forms and include supporting documents.
