TSC Reveals Teachers’ Most Preferred Counties

This data provides insights into the preferences of Kenyan teachers and highlights the need for equitable distribution of teachers across the country.

It also underscores the importance of providing adequate support to teachers, particularly those working in more challenging environments, to ensure that they feel valued and motivated in their work.

As such, policymakers and education leaders should focus on developing strategies to support and retain teachers in all counties, particularly those that are less popular or more challenging.

This could include offering incentives such as housing, transport, and other benefits, as well as providing ongoing professional development opportunities and support. By doing so, they can help to ensure that all students have access to high-quality teaching and learning experiences, regardless of where they live.

Nairobi County

According to data from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Nairobi is the most preferred region for teachers seeking transfers since the government implemented the delocalization policy.

This policy, which started in 2018, aimed to transfer teachers who had “over-stayed” at the same work station.

Between November 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022, 36,277 teachers nationwide applied for transfers. Of these, 14,733 were matched and approved while 21,544 are still pending.

During the period, 1,885 teachers applied to be transferred to Nairobi, while only 76 requested transfers out of Nairobi.

However, by the end of January, only 41 of the 1,162 transfer requests to primary schools and four to secondary schools out of 723 had been approved. During the same period, 45 primary school teachers left Nairobi while only one secondary school teacher left.

Kajiado County

Kajiado County has been identified as one of the most desirable counties for teachers, according to data from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya.

The county received 237 requests for transfer to its secondary schools, compared to just 94 requests from teachers who wanted to leave the county. Meanwhile, 486 primary school teachers applied to work in Kajiado, while 434 wanted to be transferred elsewhere.

Interestingly, the highest number of primary school teachers (1,336) applied to be transferred to Bungoma County, while 1,074 others wanted to be transferred out of the county.

Embu County

These figures were released by TSC in response to a request from Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi, who was asking for information about the transfer of teachers in and out of Embu County.

In total, 1,157 teachers applied to be deployed to Embu, while 357 wanted to work elsewhere. Of these, 229 have already left the county, and 244 have been brought in, with other requests still pending approval.
