The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has eventually released data of teachers who will get vaccinated against Covid-19 by June 2021. A list of 110,000 teachers prioritized for the Covid-19 vaccination has been released.
TSC announced that these are teachers aged 50 years and above and fall under the first category lined up for the vaccination.
Speaking on Monday at Aquinas High School, Nairobi, the commission’s CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia asked the KCPE and KCSE examiners to take the Covid-19 vaccine jab when they enter Nairobi county for the marking exercise.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has already published the transport modalities for teachers who will take part in the marking exercise. They will be transported from their region to Nairobi starting today Tuesday for the exercise.
Among the 110,000 teachers aged above 50 years, 92,850 are from public schools. 15,000 of them are above 58 years. 16,500 teachers to be vaccinated under this category are from private and international schools.
At the launch of teachers’ mass vaccination, Willis Akhwale, chairman of the Covid-19 task force for vaccine deployment announced that teachers with underlying medical conditions but who do not fall under the said age bracket will be vaccinated in the next phase.
“We are expecting to receive another batch of about one million vaccines and those teachers will be considered then,” said Akhwale.
Dr. Macharia said TSC is working to have all teachers vaccinated.
“We shall continue collaborating with the Ministry of Health to ensure that, gradually, all teachers receive the jab,” said the TSC boss.
She stated teachers are widely exposed as they come into contact with learners who do not display symptoms even when they are infected.
Chatting yesterday, Macharia stated that the move to open the age bracket for teachers will go a long way in curbing infections among teachers. Some 330,671 teachers are in public schools and 158,000 in private.
Macharia further noted that all KCPE, KCSE examiners will be given special COVID passes to access marking centers in Nairobi.
