Treasury releases Sh4 billion for construction of CBC classes across the country

The National Treasury has made an initial Sh 4 billion available to the Ministry of Education to kick-start the first phase of the CBC school infrastructure development program.

CS Education George Magoha stated that the Sh4 billion, along with Sh 1.2 billion from the Ministry of Education’s infrastructure fund, will be used to build 6,500 classrooms in 6,371 secondary schools.

“This program seeks to address the classroom deficit in our public secondary schools to allow for a smooth transition of CBC Grade 6 learners to junior secondary in January 2023,” Magoha said in a statement on Sunday.

On October 20, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the National Treasury to transfer Sh8 billion to the Ministry of Education for the construction of 10,000 secondary school classrooms.

The program will be carried out in two stages.

Magoha stated that a multi-agency team comprised of the Ministries of Education, Interior, and other state agencies has developed a roadmap for project implementation.

The CBC Infrastructure Development Programme is being implemented as part of Kenya’s economic stimulus package, with local contractors working near secondary schools to tap local skills and expand economic opportunities.

The CS stated that contractors had been registered with the deputy county commissioners at no cost by November 12, 2021.

Following the completion of the registration process, the sub-county implementation committees will notify local contractors to bid on the construction of classrooms in schools in their respective sub-counties beginning November 22, 2021.

According to Magoha, the government is on track to gradually increase the capacity of all secondary schools.

He stated that the move will support the policy of 100% transition and accommodate more students in 2023 when the CBC Grade 6 candidates of 2022 will transition to junior secondary school.

He urged all stakeholders, including elected leaders, parents, teachers, and philanthropists, to continue supporting the government’s commitment to expanding school infrastructure.
