Ten Youths Gang-rape Two High school girls In Ahero, Kisumu

Kisumu Count police officers have been requested to quickly investigate and track a gang of 10 youths who assaulted and raped 2 high school girls in Ahero.

The two high school students were allegedly walking home from a night vigil (Disco Matanga) in Korowe area in Rabuor before being attacked by the gang near Deliverance Church.

Nyando Justice Centre Coordinator Caren Omanga, who observed the two, said they were treated at Ahero sub-county hospital and are recovering at home.

She noted that the high school students could identify one of the boys and officers from Ahero Police Station are tracing him to assist in recognising the other 9 suspects.

Ms Omanga directed the police to immediately act and stop disco Matangas and night vigils which appears to have crept back.

This comes at a time when the country is struggling with the spread of coronavirus. The high school students have been at home following the directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta that saw all learning institutions closed.

The effects of school closure have affected learners in a positive way as they engage in harmful behaviours due to idling. Cases of drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and parties have been reported during this pandemic period.

World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the future of learners is at risk should governments not reopen schools sooner. Professor Magoha has maintained that schools will reopen in January 1st 2021.

The Education Cabinet Secretary, however, meets the Education stakeholders today, a meeting that might perhaps see learning institutions reopened before January next year, depending on the COVID19 curve.
