Essential Functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops schemes of work, lesson plans and tests that are following established procedures.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Manage student behaviour in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Maintain discipline following the rules and disciplinary policies of the school.
  • Provide appropriate feedback on work.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use the information to adjust teaching strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, comply with government policies, Teachers Service Commission, Examination Boards and School policies.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Participate in department, school, and parents meetings.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare classroom for class activities and ensure the classroom environment is safe neat and clean.
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.
  • Assign and grade classwork, homework, tests and assignments.
  • Ensure the health and safety of the students in and out of the classroom.

Job Purpose:

Enabling the success of students and helping in academic achievement to reach their potential through the implementation of the SABIS curriculum and philosophy and the consistent use of the SABIS teaching methodology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching using the provided lesson plans (may also be asked to develop such plans based on provided pacing charts as relevant and needed) for their subject(s) to be able to teach using the SABIS® point system.
  • Marking of assessments relevant to their subject(s).
  • Discussing disciplinary and student performance issues with the Academic Quality Controller (AQC) as needed.
  • Implementing the SABIS point system to ensure an environment conducive to learning in the classroom.
  • Providing support by invigilating exams as needed in an adequate and properly managed exam environment.
  • Providing support for the academically low performing students, to help improve and get motivated to reach their potential.
  • Attending training sessions when needed and as per the request of school management to enhance their understanding of the SABIS® system improving their performance
  • Managing the report card on a quarterly basis by entering the information into the SSMS as well as manually filling an internal report of student performance, all in accordance to instructions of the AQC.
  • Preparing and posting students artwork on the bulletin boards as planned by the AQC or planned by the teacher and approved by the AQC in all designated areas.
  • Preparing and participating in activity plans for all such student life-related events such as but not limited to art, open house and physical education in coordination with the AQC.
  • Preparing students for the school concerts; for example – but not limited to – singing and performing in front of an audience
  • Aiding in duties that may include testing children, substituting for absent teachers, organizing children for lunches and buses, controlling traffic (vehicles and people), and other administrative duties that may be assigned to him/her by the school SABIS management
  • Performing such other related tasks or projects as they arise and as delegated by the school SABIS management

Ideal Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in a related subject matter and/or equivalent 
  • Native English speaking candidates only
  • MS Office needed components
  • Communication Skills
  • Ability to work within a team

Swahili Teaching Fellowship, 2-year appointment

St. Lawrence University, located at 23 Romoda Drive, Canton, NY, invites applications for a 2-year, Pre-Doctoral Swahili Teaching Fellowship beginning August 16, 2021. 

This fellowship is designed for a native or near-native speaker of Swahili with advanced graduate training in Swahili studies or a related field as well as teaching experience, preferably at the university level. 

Candidates in the advanced stages of their PhD. are especially encouraged to apply. This appointment will enable the teaching fellow to enhance his/her teaching and research portfolios.

 

This fellowship includes:

  • Annual travel from home location to Canton, NY
  • A furnished apartment (utilities included)
  •  An annual stipend of USD 14,500 
  • Office space and a computer
  • An allowance for academic travel and conference/workshop participation related to the fellow's teaching and research interests.

The Swahili Teaching Fellow will teach four courses per year (two per semester) and have full access to a wide range of teaching and research materials at St. Lawrence.

 

Minimum qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Swahili studies ora related field
  2. Experience Teaching Kiswahili at the university level Preferred Qualifications
  3. Experience teaching Swahili as a second language preferred
  4. Experience teaching American students is desirable
