Teacher Who Assaulted Pupil Should Be Fired – Magoha

George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, has condemned the assault on a Standard 8 student at Nyamninia primary school in Siaya county for failing to score 400 points on the internal school assessment test.

Magoha told the media after inspecting the CBC classes at Wagwere Mixed Secondary School that the teacher, who was later arrested, should be fired.

The CS called the act savage and stated that the teacher should face the full force of the law.

“It is totally against the law to apply any stick on a child, the law currently stands, my personal opinion notwithstanding, but it is savage to cane a child like you are canning an animal, and anybody who did some teaching, canning is not going to improve but inspire rebellion from the child,” he said.

Magoha requested that the teachers be terminated and relieved of their duties by the Teacher Service Commission.

He reiterated that corporal punishment is illegal and should be avoided at all costs.

On July 21, a video of the student decrying inhumane corporal punishment at his school for ‘poor performance’ surfaced online.

The student was filmed recounting how two teachers severely whipped him for failing to score 400 on an exam.

The boy in the video stated that he was considering dropping out of school or, worse, ending his life because he could no longer bear the punishment.

In 2001, the Ministry of Education prohibited corporal punishment in schools.

The act is unconstitutional and is prohibited by the Basic Education Act of 2013. However, the behavior persists in some schools.
