Siaya County Hires 604 ECDE teachers on Permanent Terms

Six hundred and four early childhood development teachers have been permanently hired by Siaya County.

James Orengo, governor of Siaya, announced that the teachers’ letters had been processed and would be sent to them on Tuesday of the following week.

According to the Governor, this is fantastic news for the ECD teachers who have been working under Governor Cornel Rasanga’s watch for years without being officially hired on by the county administration.

“They will be joining 50 other ECD tutors recently recruited to bolster the workforce. These are necessary steps to reduce the existing workload,” the governor said.

On Thursday, the governor surprised the educators with the good news at the county office.

As the instructors’ enthusiasm reached a fever pitch, the governor announced, “You are going to be absorbed into the workforce as permanent and pensionable employees with immediate effect.”

He said that the 604 tutors have been helping students for the past decade for free or a small fee.

Orengo maintained that teachers deserved more recognition since “these tutors offer very critical roles of shaping the learners at the formative stage of academic life.”

The county government is committed to addressing the working conditions, which Governor Orengo acknowledged the teachers face.

As part of the infrastructure upgrade, “we will be erecting additional ECD blocks,” he stated.

Dr. Edgar Otumba, the county education executive, told the Star that in accordance with the established human resources criteria, instructors will be placed on a wage plan that is appropriate for them.

He revealed that Sh 87 million would be set aside in the 2023/2024 fiscal year’s budget for the new arrangement’s implementation.

“Amongst the projects lined up for the ECD, we intend to convert one ECD centre per sub-county to serve as a model centre,” he said.

Each of the six facilities will be outfitted with cutting-edge, digitally-enhanced tools to facilitate distance education.

He promised that training would be provided to teachers so that “the model ECD centres that will soon be established in the sub-counties” may be used to their full potential.

In addition, all 14 counties that make up the LREB are participating in a nurturing care program. He said every Siaya ECD will implement a nurturing care program.

The CEC also disclosed that starting in January, at the start of the new academic year, the Nyalore administration will roll out a food program for all the ECD centers in Siaya.
