MPs Want Pay Increase For Exam Invigilators.
MPs have now asked Education Secretary George Magoha to explain why teachers who administered and graded KCPE and KCSE exams were not paid.
During the exams, teachers were hired as invigilators, supervisors, exam center managers, team leaders, and exam markers.
During question time in Parliament, Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui asked why there are frequent delays in teacher pay.
He expressed regret that, while other personnel has been prioritized, teachers who provided services have yet to be compensated.
“Every year the national examinations council fails to release the payment of these teachers on time while prioritizing other personnel, the cabinet secretary should come out and explain,” Tonui said.
The lawmaker, who also serves as the assistant national treasurer of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), has called for the charges to be reviewed.
He cited the country’s current difficult economic times as motivation.
The legislator also wants Magoha to specify when the payments will be made available.
Magoha will respond to the issues before the departmental committee on education and research in two weeks.
According to data from the examination council, KCPE managers are paid Sh500 per day for four days, while their counterparts in secondary schools are paid the same amount for 18 days.
