Teachers Have Until 3rd October To Register For 2021 Teacher DECTE/DPTE Upgrading Assessment
Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has directed Principals of Teacher Training Colleges (TTC) to register all Diploma upgrading teacher trainees who are ready for assessment.
In a circular dated November 22nd, 2021, Knec states that the portal for registering trainees will open on November 22nd and close on December 3rd, 2021.
TTC principals recently met in Naivasha and proposed extending the upgrade program by six months.
The Diploma upgrade program was originally scheduled to last nine months, with six months dedicated to classwork and three months dedicated to teaching practice.
Over 30 teacher training colleges (TTCs) have been without students since January, and the program will give some of them a fresh life.
A task force recommended that both P1 and ECDE teachers participate in the mandatory training, which began in October. At the end of the training, the trainees will be awarded a Diploma certificate.
The upgrading program will last four terms for DPTE (Diploma Primary Teacher Education) and five terms for DECTE (Diploma Secondary Teacher Education) (Diploma Early Childhood Teacher Education).
Both will have coursework as well as a full three months of practicum.
Graduates for the Upgrading Programmes will be expected to teach all of the subjects available in the training area.
Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, Director of Quality Assurance and Standards at TSC, has already hinted through circular Ref: MOE.PTE/1(3) dated October 12, 2021, that teachers with Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) skills will be given first priority.
Nthamburi urged those who have not yet registered to do so before it is too late.
The Ministry of Education admitted teacher trainees to upgrade their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) and Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) certificates to Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE), respectively.
Knec will provide the assessment to these teacher trainees who are enrolled in the mandated upgrade course.
To enable Knec to carry out its mandate, all teacher trainees enrolled in these institution’s upgrade courses must be pre-registered for the assessment, according to Dr. Reuben Nthamburi.
The purpose of the pre-registration is to assist Knec in establishing the teacher trainees enrolled in the program in order to prepare for the assessments.
The portal for pre-registration of DECTE/DPTE upgrade was opened on November 22nd, 2021, and will close on December 3rd, 2021.
Students with disabilities and special needs must be properly registered in the portal. The Principal should download the nominal roll and confirm the accuracy of each learner’s details after uploading all teacher trainee details.
To carry out the pre-registration, the college Principals will log onto the Knec portal https://cbate.knec.ac.ke using the username and password previously provided by Knec for use in the PTE online registration platform.
Any trainee whose information is missing from the nominal roll should be added to the pre-registration. Following successful pre-registration of teacher trainees, the registration system will generate an assessment number for each trainee.
Knec will use this number to identify and track each learner’s performance in all assessments.
In the Upgrading Programmes, the total number of content and pedagogical hours will be 786 hours for DPTE and 1176 hours for DECTE.
They will do all of the learning areas in DECTE with more hours than in PTE upgrading, but both will have a teaching practicum of 300 hours.
P1 teachers, on the other hand, will only study subjects that they did not study in college.
Because the CBTEC expects a primary school teacher to be well-versed in all of the subjects offered in primary schools, upgrading PTE teacher trainees will be exempted from the subjects they had specialized in and will take only those they did not take in the certificate course according to a task force report.
This program currently only affects PTE and ECDE students who are unemployed.
TSC registered teachers, and those employed with County Governments, and Private Schools will be expected to begin the blended upgrade program when the school calendar returns to normal after being disrupted by the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Requirements For P1 and ECDE Teachers Wishing To Upgrade To The Diploma Level
P1 teachers who want to advance to the Diploma Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) must meet the following criteria:
1. The applicant must have a current PTE Certificate.
2. The candidate must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
3. The course’s duration will be 1500 hours.
4. The Course will be entirely residential.
5. The trainee must complete all of the courses specified in the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education upgrading program.
6. The trainees must complete a 300-hour Teaching Practicum.
7. In order to be awarded the Diploma, the trainee must complete the required hours for Course Work as well as the Kenya National Examination Council’s assessment.
8. Applicants will be required to provide evidence of moral compass and good behavior.
If an ECDE teacher wishes to advance to the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE), they must meet the following key requirements:
- The applicant must hold a valid ECDE Certificate.
- The candidate must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission.
- The Course’s duration will be 1890 hours.
- The course must be entirely residential.
- The trainees must complete a 300-hour Teaching Practicum.
- In order to be awarded the Diploma, the trainee must complete the required hours of Course Work and pass the Kenya National Examination Council’s assessment.
- Applicants must show evidence of adherence to positive moral values and good behavior.
